BEST BETS FOR SATURDAY, FEB. 6, 2010

TEMPLE GRANDIN

HBO, 8 p.m. ET

Claire Danes stars in the title role, playing an autistic young woman who not only triumphed over her challenges, but used them as advantages, in forging a career as a proponent of humane treatment of livestock and a designer of everything from stockyards to slaughterhouses. It’s the best telemovie I’ve seen in years, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. For more, see today’s BIANCULLI’S BLOG.

BULLITT

TCM, 8 p.m. ET

Tonight, Turner Classic Movies offers a double feature that’s a high-octane dream: The two best car-chase movies ever made, shown back to back. We start with this 1968 Steve McQueen movie, directed by Peter Yates, and using the rolling streets of San Francisco as the setting for one of the most visceral, intense, extended car chases ever.

DEMONS

BBC America, 9 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Lots of strange creatures are showing up, and lots of beings are being killed, in this first-season finale of BBC America’s popular new demon-hunting drama series. Killer clowns? Get ready for killed clowns.

THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE

Sundance, 10 p.m. ET

The director who co-concocted the sliced eyeball in Un Chien Andalou takes a much lighter touch in this 1972 film, which is no less full of fantasy, but so much more appealingly that in won the 1972 Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Stars include Delphine Seyrig, Stephane Audran, Bulle Ogier and Fernando Rey.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION

TCM, 10 p.m. ET

Here’s the second half of the hard-driving double feature: Made in 1971, this movie, directed by William Friedkin, made a star of Gene Hackman, and made an indelible impression with one of the best car chases ever filmed. Well, technically, a car and subway train chase. You have to see it to believe it – and even then, it’s unbelievable. And no CGI anywhere.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE

NBC, 11:29 p.m. ET

Ashton Kutcher is the guest host tonight, and the musical guests are Them Crooked Vultures. That’s not bad grammar. That’s their name.
